According to research conducted by the California University of Pennsylvania’s Tourism Research Center, more than 3.7 million people visited Adams County in 2014. As notable, visitation in 2014 is considerably higher than years prior to the 150th Anniversary, including 2012 when visitation was 3.4 million.
A primary goal of Destination Gettysburg, in the preparation for the 150th Anniversary, was capitalizing off the success of the 150th Anniversary in 2013 to maintain visitation in subsequent years in 2014, 2015 and beyond. In early 2014, following the 150th Anniversary, Destination Gettysburg unveiled a shift in marketing strategy to focus more on experiences beyond Civil War history. Marketing by the organization targeted new and younger visitors by promoting such experiences at family fun, outdoor recreation, food, agritourism and shopping, among other experiences.
