Tourism Drives Jobs in Adams County

Picture
In keeping with National Travel and Tourism Week’s theme, Travel Matters, it’s important to recognize just how important it is to the local workforce.

According to the 2017 Economic Impact of Travel and Tourism in Pennsylvania report, more than 5,200 employees in Adams County are impacted by tourism. Many of these workers are directly impacted, meaning they are employed with a company or organization that is in the tourism industry. However, others are indirectly impacted through jobs at places that are frequently patronized by visitors such as gas stations, grocery stores or jobs in public service.

The tourism industry has a ripple effect beyond the 5,272 employees affected. Employees in jobs that are not commonly associated with tourism such as plumbers, electricians, landscapers and contractors are also affected by tourism as they are hired for projects at hotels, museums, restaurants and stores within the tourism industry.

As discussed in a previous blog post, tourism has a major effect on our local economy. $725 million annually are spent by visitors in Adams County, contributing to more than $130 million in federal, state and local taxes. The total amount of wages for these employees directly and indirectly connected to tourism are more than $287 million annually, and because of that, those employees are able to support the economy through their own spending.

Frontline employees, like waitstaff, retail sales associations, front desk staff, transportation providers and docents, are usually the first interactions a destination visitor has. It’s important that those employees are knowledgeable about the destination and can relay information to inquiring visitors. To help facilitate learning opportunities for frontline staff, Destination Gettysburg created the Hospitality Heroes program. Every month, employees throughout Adams County are invited to visit a local business to experience all that is offered there. After personally experiencing a business that an employee might not have visited on their own, they can provide valuable information directly to visitors.

Everyone in Adams County is positively affected by tourism in some way. Whether it’s paying less in taxes or being directly employed in the industry, travel continues to matter in Adams County.
