While Adams County, Pa., hosts visitors from around the world, a large percentage of its visitors are from the Mid-Atlantic region – with Pennsylvania, Maryland, New York and Ohio being among its biggest markets, according to surveys conducted by California University of Pennsylvania’s Tourism Research Center.
The reasons for this are simple – Adams County is a short getaway for millions of residents throughout the Mid-Atlantic, and Destination Gettysburg focuses much of its marketing efforts toward the 69 million people that live within 300 miles of Adams County.
While Adams County, and especially Gettysburg, are popular among history buffs, the destination attracts a wide variety of visitors and interests – ranging from student field trips in the spring to families throughout the summer and couples year-round. Their interests vary from Civil War to shopping to fun activities such as golfing and skiing to drives throughout the countryside and outdoor adventure.
Many of Adams County visitors (52.9 percent) are repeat visitors – meaning they’ve been to the destination before. Sixteen percent, the CALU research showed, have been to the region more than 20 times.
The majority of visitors (88.5 percent) travel to Adams County for leisure, meaning that the Gettysburg area is part of a family vacation. The remaining travel to Adams County to visit friends and family or for business travel, according to the survey.
